Nineteen Eighty Four: George Orwell

In this post-WWII novel, author, George Orwell touches on what life would be like in a world with an overbearing, and corrupt government which constantly manipulates, and decieves it’s citizens. Treating them like clueless cattle. Life is destitute for the people of this timeline. Through a re-working of the old language into a more palletable variety of dialog referred to as “newspeak”. Taking away much of commoner’s ability to discuss less savory topics amongst one another. The populous is constantly bombarded with crooked propaganda. Regular folk are kept poor, uneducated, and under tight control. The party watches every bit of activity by it’s people with a wide network of spies, and surveillance devices. No one is safe from the prying eyes of Big Brother. Only those born prior to the great war remember what the world was like before the party’s abominable brainwashing tactics destroyed the ideals of idependance.

Though this book is a work of fiction, the events of the present day make it seem more like a cautionary tale. Written by a time traveler from some futuristic dystopian society.

1984 was enjoyable to read. However I have not actually finished the book. I find it to be a pale relflection of our current western society. In my mind I don’t need to finish the book to know the conclusion of the story. Just take a look at the world around you. We’re living in a 1984 style universe right now. Though that observation is more true for those living in the big city more so than rural areas.

Moral of the story: Do your civic duties and move every copy of 1984 from the fiction, to non fiction sections at your local public library.
