My opinion on Apple Computers

After spending half of the day with one for the first time in my life.

This one in particular was okay. A 2012 Mac Mini running MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina. Not the fastest nor slowest machine I have ever used. To be ever so incredibly honest and blunt about Catalina as an operating system. It impresses me.

The Pros

I appreciate how Apple actually makes an honest effort to develop a seamless ecosystem of applications. Every app I have tested has launched in a perfectly reasonable time and all adhere to a strong visual, and functional standard of which I have never experienced on a desktop computer. Applications on MacOS are thoughtfully integrated to the operating system. Every element of the UI is meticulously placed and thoughtfully organized. No backwards compatibility stuff that Windows 10 tries to pull. Nor is it afflicted with any of the tropes of the oddball chimera-like Linux desktop environments where at times the freedom of choice gives far too great a pool to ponder, and may be a wee bit challening to choose the right fit. MacOS is Unix based so having access to a familiar file system is nice. Having a terminal experience just as intuitive as on one of my Linux boxes is quite nice.

The machine itself feels appropriately premium; typical of Apple. The chassis is robust and stylish as all hell. Although severely outdated in [Present Day], I do think that at the time of it’s release this machine was a sweet little piece of tech. I’m very impressed by most of what I have experienced with it so far. I think I’m starting to understand why all of the hipsters ride Tim Apple’s dick so hard. Although there is one absolutely fatal flaw that is impossible to ignore. Let me be clear I’m totally certain that Apple devices would be my primary choice in computers if they didn’t sandbag themselves so hard by doing the typical thing that everyone complains about when it comes to apple.

The Cons

Software for Macintosh has a shelf life and if you don’t have the latest and most up to date hardware, your fancy pants Macintosh then becomes what I can only describe as an incredibly expensive paperweight. Tim Apple spits in the face of anyone that has aspirations of making their devices last. MacOS Catalina is no longer supported. Meaning no security updates, and no application updates. That means I was not able to install any application that had released in the last decade! After the realization that I was not allowed install practically anything on this system it began to click in my head that Apple is deserving of every single bit of praise and criticism they receive. Apple’s business model of providing a premium computing experience while simultaneously manufacturing machines that are undoubtedly destined to become e-waste. Perplexes me even more now that I have gotten to spend time using one of their devices. Incredibly frustrating.

The Conclusion

Overall I think I would rate it a pretty low 4.5 out of 10. The premium feel and cutting edge aesthetic doesn’t mean much when there’s no software to run on it.

I’m Alive!

Holy smokes man! It has been such a long time since I have posted an update! Life has been quite busy with all sorts of adventures. There has not been much time to sit down and write. Also, I have been having difficulties getting Doom Emacs to function properly on Ubuntu through WSL. Since I manage all of my Git repos, including the website through Emacs accomplishing these tasks has proven to be more hassle than it’s worth. My main operating system for the last year has been Windows (puke) and it simply is not a sufficient replacement for a bare metal Linux system. However, I have been enjoying some extended Windows gaming sessions. Last year I purchased a Steam Deck as well. With intentions of converting it to my primary machine for gaming and productivity but things have proven to be more simple to just use my ThinkPad for any Linux related productivity tasks.

Unfortunately my aspirations of becoming king of all IT neckbears has been put on the backburner for now. With that being said, 2023 has proved to be the most productive that I have ever been in the pursuit of my music career. I’m now in two, count em, two bands both with modest success in the local scene and it couldn’t be more enjoyable. I am thankful every day to have meet such a great group of kind and welcoming musicians to share the stage with and I hope to continue this journey as long as I can. While that may mean I have to slow down on my IT pursuits I must say that the trade off is well worth it.

Keep an eye out on the Decades page for updates on future shows.

Homer’s Illiad.

I have began my day, each morning this week by brewing a pot of strong coffee, and reading Homer’s Illiad. I pick away at it, a few pages at a time when I can. The sometimes overwhelmingly large dose of caffeine assists me to stay alert, and focused on my task; while my pets demand my attention, threatening to spill my coffee from the stand next to my chair. In previous attempts at forward progress through this millenia old epic, I had read a fair amount of pages deep into the story. Unfortunately for me, extensive breaks inbetween reading sessions blurred my comprehension of the material. So, I have once more restarted from page one. I’m quite glad that I have, too. After listening to a podcast on the concept of “The Bicameral Mind” as well as some conversation with a friend on the subject. My imagination has been on firing on all cylinders wonderingabout how the people of Bronze Age civilisation may have perceived their inner voice. The way the Illiad was composed seems to suggest that the characters of the story do not possess an inner voice like myself, and many of my friends do. Rather, these people seem to perceive their emotions, and conciousness as the voice, and will of the gods; influencing actions, and their fate. I have yet to encounter any instances of Homer mentioning any of the characters in his poem to have “thought” or “imagined” as most modern writers would describe. Instead they become motivated, and persuaded by the nature of the gods and their personalities to enact their will. The history and philosophy attatched to the Epics of Homer is grand, and intoxicating. I will create a standalone blog post for this book once I fully complete it. Mar 1 03:19:00 2023.

Gains!

My good buddy and I made our way down to the nearest hobby shop yesterday got ourselves a big pile of booster packs, and some of the newest structure decks. Upon opening our loot, I managed to pull a spell card from the latest set that is currently selling for around $40 on ebay! Woweeee Zoweee! I’m not sure if I have ever ended up with a single card worth that much before in my life. Super exciting stuff! I plan to sell the card online in attempts to cushion my wallet from our ventures. Wish me luck! Sat Feb 18 16:00:00 2023.

Your Move!

Holy moly, what a big ol’ nostalgia trip. A friend and I have recently starting collecting, and playing Yu-Gi-Oh! cards again after a long hiatus. We could definitley get ourselves into some trouble now that we’re adults, instead of begging mom and dad to purchase cards for us. Gambling is awesome! With our rekindled love of the game, the subject of streaming pack openings, and duels has been in discussion. Whether we stream, or just upload VODs will be determined by my own laziness. However, keep an eye out on my peertube instance for future Duel Monsters content. Fri Feb 17 16:00:00 2023.

Docker

Lately I have began learning how to use Docker as a way to quickly deploy portable applications between systems. I feel as though this will be highly useful in organizing and maintaing my home server. Tue Oct 25 02:18:18 2022.

New Format

After some thought about older versions of the site. I have decided to revise this blog page back into a rolling format. It seems to be the logical layout for as little as I write here. Links to previous blog articles are pinned to the top of the page. Every new article from here on out will be rolled out onto this page and sorted by date, newest to oldest. I spent more time on back end shenanigans than I did actually writing the content. My hope is that this will be much more efficient and encourage me to update the blog more often.
